Have you ever used a product, played a game, or used an app that was effortless to learn? Every so often I run across that kind of elegance, and it is truly a pleasure every time.
Recently I watched an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto – he is the creator of the very successful Mario Brothers game – where he discusses how he designed the first level of the game in a way that “teaches” people how to play it.
In that first level, the player learns every action that Mario can take, and how to play the rest of the game easily. Watching the interview, you can tell he that really bonded with the player’s experience and was concerned with how they feel as they play the game.
Watch the interview
It’s a fascinating interview, and very insightful not only for game design, but for designing any kind of software.
This is a great inspiration to me as a software designer. Shigeru Miyamoto is a legendary game designer, and to hear him describe his thought process and ideas on how to create such amazing games is fascinating to me.
I aspire to apply these principles in the software I create too. In my current project (GetFiveStars) we are exploring techniques like this to help new customers get started with our service and learn how to use it easily. It is a continuous process of course, but it’s satisfying when you see customers just “get it”.
What is your favorite product or service? If you have any great ones that stand out I’d love to hear about them!
