Creating and Using WordPress Gravatars

by on November 20, 2010 · 7 comments

When you’re visiting other blogs and you scan down to read the comments, do you notice how each of the comments has a photo associated with it? It might be someone’s smiling face, a business logo, or the anonymous “mystery man” figure. Those are called gravatars, aka Globally Recognized Avatars.

Gravatars are an easy way to associate a name with a face in the cyberworld and it’s very easy to create one. But if you still need some convincing, here are some reasons why you should use a gravatar:

  1. Gravatars can increase brand awareness. Use your company logo and start leaving comments wherever you go. The more people see your logo, the more they will recognize your brand.
  2. Gravatars can increase your website traffic. By using humorous, interesting and unique gravatars, people might be intrigued to see what your site is about and will follow your link.
  3. Gravatars can help you express yourself. If you’re online just for fun, then use a photo of your significant other, favorite movie star, or longtime pet. Just be sure to follow the Gravatar terms of use.

Now, let’s go step by step through the Gravatar creation process.

First create a free account at Gravatar.

These accounts have an email address attached to them so if you have more than one email account, make note of which one you used. This is the email that you’ll use whenever you want your gravatar to show.

Gravatar will send you a confirmation email to the address you submitted so be sure to log in and click that activation link! After you activate your account, you’ll be asked to create a username and password.

Now it’s time to add a photo which will represent you. Simply click on the blue link on the “Manage Gravatars” page (which shows up as soon as you create your log in information).
Choose where you have the image stored. Depending on which of these you choose, you’ll follow varying steps for uploading or taking the photo.

Choosing a photo from your computer hard drive, you’ll next browse through the files on your computer and choose the correct one to upload.

If you want to use an image that’s on your website, select “an image on the internet” and enter the URL.If you want to update your photo completely with a self-portrait, choose the “webcam” option and smile!

And if you already have multiple images uploaded but you want to change it up, select the last option, “Previously Uploaded Images”.

Now, you’ll be able to crop your photo to your liking. The cropping pages look a bit different depending on which option you used for the photo but the results are the same.

Crop, save, and select the photo you want and you’re done! This is your final confirmation page, with your chosen gravatar outlined in a blue border.

Now you can logout of your gravatar account and start blog hopping. If you visit any websites that support gravatars, when you enter your gravatar email address when leaving a comment, your chosen gravatar will automatically appear.

If you have multiple email accounts, you can add those to your gravatar account. This way you don’t have to wrack your brain trying to remember which one will bring up your gravatar.

Another cool thing if you add a second email address is you can select a different image for each email you use. So for your personal email you can choose your smiling face and for your business email you can choose your business logo or product.

There’s no need for your comments to be stuck with the boring “Mystery Man” gravatar anymore! Bring more attention to your brand and your business image by personalizing your gravatar today.

I have been a “mystery man” for too long, time to change. Thank you for the easy step by step instructions!

This is great. I love the idea of using a gravatar for branding and to create more recognition online. I’m ready to stop being a “mystery man” too. Thanks for the great tips!

Thanks for that – saved me a lot of ferreting around trying to find out from scratch. I might miss being Mystery Woman of the Year!

Oh, I always thought those were just the flavor of the month and didn’t realize they could serve a purpose. Thanks!

I am not a “mystery person” any longer. That was simple. Thanks again!

Great TUT as usual Don.

Clear and concise.

I like to see a Gravatar next to a comment – nice to put a face / image with the words.
