Pinterest User Demographics

In any type of social media site, there are different demographics of users that keep the site running in different ways. For example, on Facebook, there are plenty of age groups that play games, but certain age groups play different types of games and spend different amounts of money on them.

On other sites, such as Twitter, different age groups use the site for different things, such as for promoting their job or business, tweeting about events, or making sure that people know about the latest political happenings.

Business owners will reap the most benefit from social media if they understand the base demographics of the people they’re trying to reach. Knowing what those people are interested in, what social media they’re using and specifically what they need will place your business in front of the right people – those who are ready and willing to buy your product or services.

For Pinterest, their user base is still growing in certain demographic areas but those that are represented strongly keep the site building and growing. There are several different areas that keep the site going strong, and there are 4 large user bases that keep Pinterest pumping with posts everyday:

User Base #1: Travel Buffs
If you check the travel category on any given day on Pinterest, you will always find wonderful snapshots from around the world. While some are professional photos that people are sharing, others are taken by normal people who just want to share what’s going on around them. It not only helps to keep the site going strong, but it also helps for people around the world to see a whole new area, new way of life, and give them new ideas for wonderful vacations.

It’s just a wonderful way for them to share what they are talented in.

User Base #3: Chefs
It doesn’t matter if you are a master chef or just a budding home cook, Pinterest is a wealth of great recipes, ideas, and new things to try. Famous chefs can easily post some of their favorite recipes, how to’s, and tips to help budding chefs learn the ropes.

Other people can post pictures that they love of some of their favorite foods, new foods they’ve created, and fun ideas to try out for other up and coming cooks. Of course, there’s nothing like seeing some superb desserts floating across your screen to make you want a midnight snack!

The site is constantly full of new crafting ideas, from creating unique dresses from t-shirts to decoupage projects to kid’s art projects. Thanks for breaking down the core user bases at Pinterest. I knew women comprised about 80% of their user base but I never really knew what the popular categories were…although I suspected cooking was one of them. The other day my wife was talking about how she found all these cool recipes on Pinterest. I was like, “What…recipes on Pinterest?” I had no idea…lol.

Interesting article, considering all the discussions of the benefits of Pinterest for business advertising I would have thought the core user base would be more diverse. Thanks for breaking this down, it provides me some food for though on how to best utilize this application.
