Online Video Tips for Small Business and Affiliate Marketing

by · 8 comments

This time someone interviews me. A friend of mine – Bob Thordarson, CEO of BluCapp, Inc. interviewed me about online video for a webinar he was putting together. He gave me a copy of the final video so I wanted to share it here on the Expand2Web Podcast.

In the interview we shared some interesting stats about how huge online video is, and some examples of small business owners using simple online videos to promote their business.

We also discussed how online video is a perfect tool for affiliate marketing (if done right) and even some killer tips on how to set up and optimize your YouTube channel and videos.

Interview Highlights

Here are a few of the things we discuss in the interview:

  • What a huge opportunity online video is for online marketers today, and back it up with some amazing stats.
  • Some specific examples of how small businesses and affiliate marketers are using video to get an edge in the universal search results.
  • A really simple and inexpensive way to make a video even if you are too shy for the camera.
  • And a story of how my daughters (8 and 11 at the time) made $500 by entering an online video contest with a funny product video!

By the way, while editing the transcript, I can see that I said the word “right?” about ten thousand times. I’ll be sure to lose that annoying habit in the next podcast! ;)

Great interview, Don. I have always loved your simple yet effective no-nonsense approach to local marketing. You’ve inspired me to get more involved in video too. Love the Channel 9 story. Can you tell us what software you use to shoot your screen casts? Thanks.

Thanks Jon!
I use a tool called Screenflow on the Mac. It’s a great piece of software; easy to use and it has pretty much everything you need to create screen casts. Camtasia is also good if you are on a PC.

Good stuff Don. I started marketing my wife’s business on YouTube in October, 2007, two years before I found your theme and stared using SmallBiz (which I think was version 1.5 back then). Wow! I can personally attest to the power of YouTube and video marketing. Judy now has over 1.25 million views of her how to videos on YouTube alone. I also recently jolted a client to #1 Google rankings using a combination of white hat tactics and local search along with YouTube video marketing.

For PC owners, I use Adobe Premiere Elements. A bit of a learning curve, and sometimes unstable, but it always produces good final product and has a lot of editing functions. Prior I used the Serif Movie Maker which is also good but nowhere near Adobe’s range. Also, Windows’ stock MovieMaker does an adequate job. I used earlier versions for years doing slide shows from photos before taking actual video.

Hey Don

Enjoyed the podcast. Sounds like I need to make better use of YouTube and embedded videos for engaging content and more channels for people to find my website. I’ve played around a little with ‘BSR Screen Recorder’ for screen recording. It is good, but I don’t think it is as slick as Camtasia, however, it is a little more reasonably priced. Will look to upgrade to Camtasia one day. Cheers

Hey Don,
I haven’t bothered you for a while so I figured it was time:)
I put together just a basic video, took the code provided by Youtube and slapped it on my site. I would like, though, for the video to play automatically when someone lands on the site. Can I do that? How? Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger – nice to hear from you!
You can just add &autoplay=1 to the end of your embed url to make the video auto play.

Did it and it works! Thanks Don, appreciate it! Roger
