In the comments on ProBlogger, someone asks &quot;how do I keep my links&quot;.  I found a resource and included it in the comments there and am including it here for your readers:

The big issue is that WordPress.com is a very trusted site and so one can get a lot of inherited trust from the search engines by hosting content there.

But when you want more control you need your own domain.  Using the techniques described above you can get the best of both worlds.
