If you are just beginning to set up your WordPress website for the first time, you will probably want to customize the way it looks. This is particularly important for small businesses who need their online presence to stand out from their competitors.
In WordPress, a “widget” is also referred to as a “sidebar accessory.” It allows you to easily add design elements, images, content and more into your sidebar. This makes it easy for people without any knowledge of Web code (HTML, PHP) to custom design their website.
The following video gives a quick overview of how to add a widget to your sidebar.
As explained in the video, in order to customize your widgets, simply log into your WordPress Dashboard, then go to Appearance > Widgets. Note that some WordPress themes do not allow the use of customized widgets; in this case, you may want to change themes if you want to be able customize the appearance of your sidebars.
One particularly useful widget is the Text Widget. You can add any type of content to the sidebar of your website using this widget. See this tutorial on adding the WordPress Text Widget for step by step instructions on how to use this widget and add it to your site.
From the “Widgets” page, simply click on the widgets that you wish to include in your sidebar. Then you can either drag them around to rearrange their order of appearance, or leave them as is. When you’re finished, click “Save,” and your sidebar should be fully customized.
