How To Get A Direct Link To Your Google Places Review Page

You’ve claimed your Google Places page for your business. Once you’ve completely filled out and optimized your profile, the next step is build a solid set of legitimate reviews from your customers.

To do this, you need to make it easy for your best customers to leave you reviews on your Places page.

Here’s a video that shows you how to get an exact link to the reviews section of your Google Places page.

Video: Tips for Getting Your Google Places Review Link

To get a direct link to the reviews:

  1. Find the business in Google Places
  2. Get the CID from the URL
  3. Create a URL like this: http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=9368790565215994253&dtab=2&action=openratings
  4. Watch the video above for more explanation if you are having trouble…

Once you have this link, you can share it with your best customers. It will take them directly to your review page and make it easy for them to leave you a review in Google Places.

Update: Google has merged Google Places with Google+, and the CID no longer exists. Mike Blumenthal shares a tip on how to get the direct link to add a review using the new Google+ page URL. Just add add ?review=1 to the end of a G+ Business page it will open the review box directly.

Google+ Local Reviews Link

Featuring a particular review

If you want to feature a particular review on your Google Places Page, you can do that with a special URL. One of my local SEO buddies Nyagoslav sent in this tip:

You can make your own (or anyone else’s) review(s) “featured” by adding the following code after the cid number:

&cad=source:gmm-twitter&ppht=review_permalink&author=

After this you have to get the uid of the review author (you can get it when you go to the author’s personal Google Places page), so the whole URL should look this way:

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?cid=601220016061457560&ppht=review_permalink&author=204195812566033997491

He’s got a full writeup on it here: How To Use Google Places Featured Review.

I’m curious – what are you doing to make it easy for your customers to leave you a review on your Google Places Page?

Wow, thanks for the mention, Don!

A really interesting post and question you ask, I’d be glad to hear more people sharing ideas about what they do to get more reviews and in general what their reputation management campaigns include.

Thanks!

You bet Nyagoslav. Will you be at SMX West this week? I live in the San Jose area and it would be great to meet up there.

It’s actually much simpler. Open the places page and right click the “write a review” button. The select “copy link address” from the menu. That’s it.

I like your other suggestions for things like the featured review.

Thanks Stephen – that’s true.

If you’ve already left a review for a place then it’s trickier tough, since the Write a Review button does not show. And you must be logged in to leave a review.

You are amazing, Don Campbell!!! I just did a Google search for “link to Google Places review from site” and who popped up in the search results – none other than Don Campbell! :)

You’ve got such a great knack for solving the problem right before I need the answer.

Thank you for all that you do!!! :)

My mother told me there is no such thing as a dump question. so here I go.

For someone to go in and write you a review must they have a google account or gmail account?

I wonder if I should only email my clients that have a gmail email. Or yahoo for yahoo local?

Does yahoo have url link that can be sent as well?

Thanks

Any input is appreciated

Hi John,
Your mother is right :)

Yes they do need a Google account to leave a review. It is a good idea to send the link to the profile that your customer has an account for.

You can get a link to your Yahoo Local profile as well. I don’t think you can make it go directly to the review page though. So just find your Yahoo Local profile and send that link to them.

Hi! Thanks for the blog post. I know I’m a bit late to the party, but I hope someone’s lurking around yet and can answer a quick question.

What if no CID pops up in the url? I’m looking for Equipaws Pet Services in Miami, FL, and don’t see the CID. I’d love some help! Thanks!

Frankie,
Yes, Google recently merged Google Places with Google+ and the CID has gone away. Here’s a screen shot showing the new way to get a direct link to your business on Google+ Local: https://skitch.com/e-doncampbell/efc9u/equipaws

This link is dead :( Somehow I am still unclear as to the latest procedure to direct link to business pages to leave reviews. Seems there are no longer any “Write a Review button,” etc. to identify the process for visitors. You would think Google would make it a prominent feature.
Thanks for the article though.

It worked for me. Here’s an Example that I used for Lance Timmermans site. https://plus.google.com/109668950727961218117/about?review=1

It took a moment but it loaded the review window. I went into the ‘view source’ and grabbed the link out to make sure I was getting the correct code. I hope this is helpful.

OK I went to your example page and could finally see the blue button. It may be that I went to pages I administer so the button won’t show since I shouldn’t be writing reviews-LOL.
Thanks for your help.

Hello! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog.
Is it hard to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any points or suggestions? Appreciate it

I’m trying to get my website noticed and i’m not quite sure how.. I’ve researched and found that people who have websites with many positive reviews are the that show up first. Everyone check out my website and tell me what you think about it. Thank you

Here is a problem that I am running into, and am wondering if anyone has a work around. This link works beautifully if your client is using their desktop, however, almost everyone today is running around on their cell phones, and wouldn’t it be nice if we could get them to write a review right there in the store? However as far as I can tell, Google simply doesn’t allow cell phone users to write reviews. Instead the link pulls up the business’ Google+ mobile page where you can +1 the business. However you can’t actually write a review. Does anyone know a workaround for mobile users?

Great question Daniel.
In those cases, the best you can do is ask for a +1 on your Google+ Business Page, or use a tool like GetFiveStars.com to capture feedback from customers and feature the good reviews on your website in hReview microformats.

Does your blog have a contact page? I’m having problems locating it but, I’d like to shoot you
an email. I’ve got some suggestions for your blog you might be interested in hearing. Either way, great site and I look forward to seeing it grow over time.

I’m really loving the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility problems? A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?

Thanks for the update about review=1. Do you know of anything that will work for mobile users? It seems that those links don’t take mobile users directly to the review page.

Thanks again!

This is an excellent little trick for direct linking to the review box. I’m really interested to hear if anyone has solved the problem with reviewing from mobile devices.

Hi Hitsplash,
Yes me too – Google does not support leaving reviews on mobile devices – yet. I’m hoping they will come around though.

Trying to make a qr code for postcards for direct mail that will open the review page on mobile devices, the ?review=1 works fine on desktop browsers, but does not work for mobile browsers, even if they are set to grab the desktop site… is there a way to open the review page directly on a mobile device???

Hi Benjammin,
Unfortunately Google does not support reviews from mobile devices. Yelp does now, so we are hoping that Google will follow this lead and enable it!
