Google Docs, Calendar and other Google services require you to log in to Google. But did you know you can create a Google Account with any email address?
You don’t have to use GMail – you can use your Yahoo email, Hotmail, AOL mail, the email address your Internet provider gave you, or any address to create one.
Important Update:Some Google Apps now require Gmail. But if you create your Google Account using this link, then you can create it without a Gmail address still.

There are a growing number of third party websites using Google Accounts for authentication as well. This means that you can use the same login across all of these services instead of creating a new userid and password for each.
Anyway, I get this question a lot, so I thought I would point it out.
What are your thoughts on this – are you using a Google Account without GMail?

Dear Don,
I’m already aware of that method and it’s actually quite interesting since it allows users to continue with their-always-familiar-mail-account.
But the problem is that lately Google’s started to increasingly use phone or SMS verification in order to activate your account. They argue it’s for preventing spam (hey, after all, they already have the captcha for that!) but the fact is that’s a big personal data risk since it involves giving away such a private contact detail as your phone is.
I hope Google review their attitude on this, since it’s only getting users away from this kind of login and, hence, their platforms.
Regards,
Darío
@Dario, yes I’ve been getting an increasing number of questions from people who try this and are asked to verify via phone. It’s confusing for people and as you say, giving away more information.
Why don’t they just use the email account for verification?
It works but, google made it more secure this days. They still put the phone verification after u verify it on your email. Any idea how can we past this without using phone verification. Like not using to many sim card’s just to verify emails. =/
Thanks,
Karlo
Hi Don,
Can i used this method using my E-mail with yahoo for Adsense?
I already known this method to create Google Account with any other free mail provider.
Anyways Thanks for It.
I teach elementary students who are not allowed e-mail access or an e-mail account of any kind at school. Do you know of a way to create a Google account without actually having an e-mail address?
Hi Traci,
I can see why you don’t want elementary students to have email (my daughter is an elementary student!) It seem that you will need an email address in order to create a Google Account. It doesn’t need to be a GMail address, it can be any email but you need to have one.
Thanks, Don. I’d actually love for them to have an e-mail. It would make elementary projects so much easier. However, trying to manage 365 student e-mails would be a pain. I just thought I would check. I think Google has a different option with Google Educator. I’ll try it out. Some other teachers have told me that they are going to help me with it after school. YEAH!
Thanks again.
it is very useful to me. Thank you.
I will like to create my account with google.
I used Google for third party in order to comment on Fox News, but Google uses your full name rather then a User name which we used to have with Disqus. Now if I try to enroll in another third party it comes up my email is already in use and I can not enroll in a different third party link. How can you correct it?
Dear Don,
I wanted to create a gmail account, WITHOUT the @gmail.com thing. How do you change it to what ever you want it?
Hi Teresa,
That’s what I show how to do in the video. Where are you getting stuck?
You can’t create gmail account without @gmail.com , but you can create google account without @gmail.com and use it in http://www.gmail.com to login
This is so cool:D
Great!! great video, clean and nice!! thank you
Hi Don
I see Google has just changed their new account form and it appears that they are forcing you to create a gmail account (using your process in the video). I manage a few google groups and sites and I find it very useful for our members to keep there own e-mails. I did find a link to the old form: http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/accounts/
Thanks!
I wanted to create a google account but it forced me to create a gmail.com address. Also I selected a username on Youtube with that account. Now I found here and learn how to use my old e-mail address to create a google account. I did it but I cannot associate the username I selected for Youtube with this account. If I delete the username on Youtube it warns me for not being able to use the same name later. I want to delete the gmail.com account completely and associate Youtube username with my own e-mail address account. Is there any way to do this?
ahmetgns,
Take a look at the bottom of this blog post – I provide a link where you can create the Google account and it does not force you to use your Gmail address. Here’s the link again – Create Google Account
Don Campbell,
As I already said I created another Google account with my old e-mail but I want to do something which I explained in my previous comment. Thanks for your reply.
I like this
This does not work anymore, now you are forced to choose gmail address…
kele – see the link directly below the video in this blog post. From there you can create a Google Account without using Gmail.
Yes, thank you, it works! I was watching the video and when you click on Google page to create new account there is new page which force you to create “@gmail.com” account, this page:
https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?continue=https%3A%2F%2Faccounts.google.com%2FManageAccount
Hey Don. I’ve seen this link posted elsewhere a few times. Being that Google now pretty much forces you to sign up with a gmail account on pretty much every sign in page or asks you for SMS verification … how long do you think they they realize the huge (I am assuming) amount of traffic inbound via that link and close it!? So much for using other email addies !!!??? I actually am glad I came across this page. The other day I created a Google account with a hotmail account. Then when I tried to create another one with a different hotmail account I kept getting the ‘gmail’ default. So I couldn’t figure out what the hell happened!? First thing I thought was that I discovered a security risk and therefore I created a video which I promptly uploaded to Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stEsAH_JYjo). Now … I am going to take an educated guess and say that Google allows for one email (any addie domain) per IP address. I think I will change my IP and try out my hypothesis, lol!!! Geez … no wonder people are flocking away from Google!? Anyways, I will leave my video up for a day or two if you wanna see it (gotta turn up the volume) and then delete. Thanks for the great insight.
Wow … me again Don. I just realized that that link might (or might NOT!!!???) be around for awhile. I Googled ‘ Google Accounts ‘ and went down to google accounts. WELL … to my astonishment … I landed on a page that looks completely identical to your link … with only one exception … the URL !!!??? Anyways thanks again.
Did you use link below the video on this page, it seams that that link still works…
https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en
Yes Kele … that is the same link Don (OP) posted. But as you see from my second reply (which probably wasn’t confirmed yet before you responded to my first!?), if you just ‘ Google ‘ ‘Google Acounts’ and then go to Google Accounts, it is the same page . NOTE: Don’t ‘ click ‘ the main heading, but scroll down to the lower section and click that ‘ Google Accounts ‘ !
Hey Don … a little off subject question … what app did you use to create your video in video !? I am really amazed at how the audio is actually so synced with the movement of your lips, lol !? Even many browser based video apps don’t have such synchronicity and if they do, either the audio quality or the video quality suffers. I actually have yet to find a browser based video in video app rather, I am referring to free video messaging (mail) and video chat (of course free, which might explain the qualities!?) like OPENTOK, EYEJOT, MailVU and SnapYap ! Please feel free to email me.
Aight – I use Screenflow on the Mac for my screen casts. It’s a great tool – can’t say enough good things about it.
Thanks, Don …. kinda figured it wasn’t freeware … it’s too good to be free. But the price is decent.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for this link for the last 30 minutes or so!
Hey Gail … if you selected ‘ notify me of comments ‘ you will get this and hopefully it will help (unless it’s too late, lol i.e. you signed up using a different addie than gmail!?) and if you didn’t then, it is obsolete!? Anyways, if you use a hotmail (not sure of others) account, the pages look really ‘ old school ‘ AND, you are only allowed various default programs. When you go to add others … you will be nagged either to sign up for gmail (required for Google +) or phone confirmation, good luck !
Hi Don,
Thanks for the info; only now do I understand the difference between creating a G account and a Gmail account (I had not let that sink in).
I have a question, though: is it possible to change my Gmail account which I created to open a G account into any other email address?
Thanks
ASprak,
You can add that e-mail address to that Gmail account’s profile and you can sign-in with that e-mail and your password for Gmail.
We want to use Google Groups for a list serve for members of our organization to ask questions and get answers in a restricted, members-only environment. Will the method you describe above work with Google Groups so our members don’t need a Google account to access our group?
Thanks.
David Hollis, you cannot access a restricted google group’s content unless you sign-in with a google account. The method described above is about creating a google account without a gmail e-mail address, so all users can sign up with their own e-mail addresses for a Google account and then join that group with that e-mail&account and then access it.
I hope you can tell me why my origional gmail account disappeared when I signed up for a new You Tube account using gmail. It all started when I wanted to change my user name on my you tube account but couldn’t find a way so I just thought I would create another account but now there is NO RECORD OF MY ORIGIONAL GMAIL ACCOUNT!!! I am freeking out! What is going on! My search to that question brought me to your web site. Can you help me? Thank you so very much
Cheryl anne
Hi Cherylanne,
Most likely you are just logged in as a different user now, so you’ll need to log completely out of your Google account, and then log into your GMail account to get your emails back again.
Easy to bypass, all you need is an Android tablet.
When you create a gmail account on an Android tablet, it doesn’t verify a phone #, just a captcha code.
Problem solved. I’ve personally registered countless consecutive accounts using my tablet (which is an Asus Transformer).
Very cool – I did not know that. Thanks Bob!
Hey Cherylanne Don pretty much summed it up but maybe is lacking in what you need to hear (sorry Don!?) !? Did you use the ‘same’ g-mail addie !? If you signed in with the same addie and wanted to create a new ‘youtube’ account … obviously the previous one ‘associated’ with said email addie was ‘deleted’, then of course you would not see any record because it was deleted!? If you have signed in with the same addie …. you can go to ‘History’ … oh yeah, they watch ya now good, lol!!!
how to create a google plz….. Comment
Thank You Brother,For This Method.
I knew about Yahoo but the Hotmail aspect is awesome, thanks for the info.
when you have opened a wordpress site or created a blogspot site, and someone makes a comment which has to be moderated by the author of the site before the comment being able to appear or be published, BUT someone is able to access the site WITHOUT it being moderated, my question is….what steps can be taken to find out who the commentator is, or what their email address is, especially if they have been able to hack into the site and alter things without being moderated by the author of the site?
Have created Google account in past using hotmail email to login. This gives calender access. I would now like to switch more to Gmail and ADD a gmail mail account. Can this be done to existing Google account accessed with my hotmail login.
Hi, I’m “Calendar Shopping” as Yahoo has fooled around with theirs so much that users can no longer receive reminders or even access Calendar from our email sites. I prefer not to become enmeshed in Google, but will give in and set up account if assured that a Calendar will be available with working Reminders in place. Thank you folks for any help you can give me on this. And thanks Don for all the good info provided here. Linda M.
Hi Linda,
I use Google Calendar and the reminders do work for me. Good luck on your calendar search!
Hi Again Don, I just set up Google Calendar and did a successful Reminder Test! Thanks again for info.
To Paul G;
Normally you can add alternate e-mail addresses to your existing Google account and then sign in with that alternate e-mail. However a note from a Google page says “You can use alternate email addresses to sign in to your Google Account, recover your password, and more. Alternate email addresses can only be associated with one Google Account at a time.” So when you get a gmail address, that means it will be a new Google account, so since your first address is associated with its own Google account, you cannot add it to your new account as an alternative address.
Thanks for info. have just found this
http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=72198
Seems you can add gmail to account but the login then becomes the new gmail login.
i like to use google acount

A few days ago the url was changed again, it’s now https://accounts.google.com/NewAccount?service=cl
Great – thanks EShy. They keep changing it so I appreciate the updated link!
Awesome resource. Unfortunately, Google has done away with setting up an account without Gmail.
That’s not true – I just checked and think link is working fine: https://accounts.google.com/NewAccount?service=cl
I really love your website.. Very nice colors & theme.
Did you build this amazing site yourself? Please reply back as I’m attempting to create my own blog and would love to find out where you got this from or just what the theme is called. Cheers!
