Google Docs, Calendar and other Google services require you to log in to Google. But did you know you can create a Google Account with any email address?
You don’t have to use GMail – you can use your Yahoo email, Hotmail, AOL mail, the email address your Internet provider gave you, or any address to create one.
Video – Create Google Account With Any Email Address
This video shows you how:
Note: If you want to create a new Google Account without using GMail, use this link: ==> Create Google Account
There are a growing number of third party websites using Google Accounts for authentication as well. This means that you can use the same login across all of these services instead of creating a new userid and password for each.
Anyway, I get this question a lot, so I thought I would point it out.
What are your thoughts on this – are you using a Google Account without GMail?

Dear Don,
I’m already aware of that method and it’s actually quite interesting since it allows users to continue with their-always-familiar-mail-account.
But the problem is that lately Google’s started to increasingly use phone or SMS verification in order to activate your account. They argue it’s for preventing spam (hey, after all, they already have the captcha for that!) but the fact is that’s a big personal data risk since it involves giving away such a private contact detail as your phone is.
I hope Google review their attitude on this, since it’s only getting users away from this kind of login and, hence, their platforms.
Regards,
Darío
@Dario, yes I’ve been getting an increasing number of questions from people who try this and are asked to verify via phone. It’s confusing for people and as you say, giving away more information.
Why don’t they just use the email account for verification?
Hi Don,
Can i used this method using my E-mail with yahoo for Adsense?
I already known this method to create Google Account with any other free mail provider.
Anyways Thanks for It.
I teach elementary students who are not allowed e-mail access or an e-mail account of any kind at school. Do you know of a way to create a Google account without actually having an e-mail address?
Hi Traci,
I can see why you don’t want elementary students to have email (my daughter is an elementary student!) It seem that you will need an email address in order to create a Google Account. It doesn’t need to be a GMail address, it can be any email but you need to have one.
Thanks, Don. I’d actually love for them to have an e-mail. It would make elementary projects so much easier. However, trying to manage 365 student e-mails would be a pain. I just thought I would check. I think Google has a different option with Google Educator. I’ll try it out. Some other teachers have told me that they are going to help me with it after school. YEAH!
Thanks again.
it is very useful to me. Thank you.
I will like to create my account with google.
Dear Don,
I wanted to create a gmail account, WITHOUT the @gmail.com thing. How do you change it to what ever you want it?
Hi Teresa,
That’s what I show how to do in the video. Where are you getting stuck?
This is so cool:D
Great!! great video, clean and nice!! thank you
Hi Don
I see Google has just changed their new account form and it appears that they are forcing you to create a gmail account (using your process in the video). I manage a few google groups and sites and I find it very useful for our members to keep there own e-mails. I did find a link to the old form: http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/accounts/
Thanks!
I wanted to create a google account but it forced me to create a gmail.com address. Also I selected a username on Youtube with that account. Now I found here and learn how to use my old e-mail address to create a google account. I did it but I cannot associate the username I selected for Youtube with this account. If I delete the username on Youtube it warns me for not being able to use the same name later. I want to delete the gmail.com account completely and associate Youtube username with my own e-mail address account. Is there any way to do this?
ahmetgns,
Take a look at the bottom of this blog post – I provide a link where you can create the Google account and it does not force you to use your Gmail address. Here’s the link again – Create Google Account
Don Campbell,
As I already said I created another Google account with my old e-mail but I want to do something which I explained in my previous comment. Thanks for your reply.
This does not work anymore, now you are forced to choose gmail address…
kele – see the link directly below the video in this blog post. From there you can create a Google Account without using Gmail.
Yes, thank you, it works! I was watching the video and when you click on Google page to create new account there is new page which force you to create “@gmail.com” account, this page:
https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?continue=https%3A%2F%2Faccounts.google.com%2FManageAccount
Hey Don. I’ve seen this link posted elsewhere a few times. Being that Google now pretty much forces you to sign up with a gmail account on pretty much every sign in page or asks you for SMS verification … how long do you think they they realize the huge (I am assuming) amount of traffic inbound via that link and close it!? So much for using other email addies !!!??? I actually am glad I came across this page. The other day I created a Google account with a hotmail account. Then when I tried to create another one with a different hotmail account I kept getting the ‘gmail’ default. So I couldn’t figure out what the hell happened!? First thing I thought was that I discovered a security risk and therefore I created a video which I promptly uploaded to Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stEsAH_JYjo). Now … I am going to take an educated guess and say that Google allows for one email (any addie domain) per IP address. I think I will change my IP and try out my hypothesis, lol!!! Geez … no wonder people are flocking away from Google!? Anyways, I will leave my video up for a day or two if you wanna see it (gotta turn up the volume) and then delete. Thanks for the great insight.
Wow … me again Don. I just realized that that link might (or might NOT!!!???) be around for awhile. I Googled ‘ Google Accounts ‘ and went down to google accounts. WELL … to my astonishment … I landed on a page that looks completely identical to your link … with only one exception … the URL !!!??? Anyways thanks again.
Did you use link below the video on this page, it seams that that link still works…
https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en
Yes Kele … that is the same link Don (OP) posted. But as you see from my second reply (which probably wasn’t confirmed yet before you responded to my first!?), if you just ‘ Google ‘ ‘Google Acounts’ and then go to Google Accounts, it is the same page . NOTE: Don’t ‘ click ‘ the main heading, but scroll down to the lower section and click that ‘ Google Accounts ‘ !
Hey Don … a little off subject question … what app did you use to create your video in video !? I am really amazed at how the audio is actually so synced with the movement of your lips, lol !? Even many browser based video apps don’t have such synchronicity and if they do, either the audio quality or the video quality suffers. I actually have yet to find a browser based video in video app rather, I am referring to free video messaging (mail) and video chat (of course free, which might explain the qualities!?) like OPENTOK, EYEJOT, MailVU and SnapYap ! Please feel free to email me.
Aight – I use Screenflow on the Mac for my screen casts. It’s a great tool – can’t say enough good things about it.
Thanks, Don …. kinda figured it wasn’t freeware … it’s too good to be free. But the price is decent.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for this link for the last 30 minutes or so!
Hey Gail … if you selected ‘ notify me of comments ‘ you will get this and hopefully it will help (unless it’s too late, lol i.e. you signed up using a different addie than gmail!?) and if you didn’t then, it is obsolete!? Anyways, if you use a hotmail (not sure of others) account, the pages look really ‘ old school ‘ AND, you are only allowed various default programs. When you go to add others … you will be nagged either to sign up for gmail (required for Google +) or phone confirmation, good luck !
