When designing a website choosing colors can take forever (at least for me). I find the process of combining colors a bit addictive, how about you?
I use a variety of color generators or color scheme selectors, there are a bunch out there, with varying degrees of user friendliness. Here are a few tools which may be a bit off the beaten track.
- I know, everyone’s favorite, (I couldn’t do a post on color scheme tools without a mention though).
- Extensive library of existing color schemes
- Allows you to test color schemes
- Or input a url and you will get a complete list of colors used on a particular site in the Grab Colors section
- I like this site because it displays the colors in a tight format with the hex code, easy for me as I need the color #’s and easy for a client who likes to see colors side by side.
- Allows you to search Pantone colors and then I use a tool such as Color Cop or Color Picker (eye dropper add ons for Firefox) to give me a hex code.
- You can put in a generic term (pink) and see all sorts of pink options and the paint strip that goes along with it – this is helpful for seeing shades of specific colors.
- This site is not helpful for color combos, it is good for narrowing your choice of color – I use it sometimes as a starting point. Or If I see a shade of paint from a company such as Behr.
- Beware, this one is really fun. You can use the sliders to get an exact shade of color and save the colors to generate a beautiful color strip which you can share with clients.

Do you have a favorite? What didn’t I list that I should have?
