I was just reading this interview about innovation with Marissa Mayer, Google VP Local and Mobile, where she brought up two methods for innovation that I hadn’t heard of before.
Marissa mentions two types of innovation in the interview:
“Castle Builder” innovation – work under a shroud of secrecy and launch a new product with a worldwide “wow” moment (like Apple does), and
“Bird Walk” innovation – launching products early and often (like Google does).
I thought those were both interesting ways to look at how both companies approach innovation.
Here’s the CNN Money interview. Make sure to watch the video at the end too – she is asked about some privacy concerns and talks about Google Dashboard – a place that clearly shows all of your Google account data, including what is shared and what is private. I have to admit I didn’t know about this.
